Student video wins 'Cool' prize

GateHouse News Service

Every October, Shawsheen Valley Technical High School visits middle schools in its participating communities and exposes eighth graders to what Shawsheen Tech has to offer through a video presentation that the school calls "The Road Show."

Set to music, the six-minute production features Shawsheen Tech students and faculty and is produced by students in both the Commercial Arts and Internet Technology shops.

"It shows all of the shops and classrooms," said Joanne Wicks, the AV/media teacher at the school. "It's wonderful. The kids do a fantastic job."

Wicks and fellow teacher Greg Bendel felt the video was so fantastic that they entered the "Road Show" in Youschools.org's second annual "Why is my school cool" video contest.

In February, Shawsheen Tech learned that its entry finished in first place and soon, Shawsheen Tech will receive its prizes, which include an HD video camera, special postings on the home page of youschools.org and youtube.com and a choice of gift certificates for either an Apple iPod Nanos or iTunes.

"This was a tremendous project for our kids to work on," said Bendel. "This project was a total group effort; several different classes and instructors worked together to make this a success. I'm really proud of the great work that all of our kids did."

The video starts with a student sitting alone at a desk, quietly talking about Shawsheen Tech. Suddenly, the screen fades to the voice of an exuberant student that says "Lets spice it up a little bit" before the production quickly transitions into an exciting two-minute slideshow about the school.

Pictures in the slideshow include Shawsheen Tech's athletic teams, photos from its success at the annual Skills USA competition as well as the prom. Many pictures of the teachers and students interacting in the classroom are also shown.

After the slideshow ends, the video returns to the first student, who returns to his monotone speaking from the beginning. He is, of course, interrupted again with more humor as the video portion of the project is shown.

The film shows clips of the students at work at the school in every shop that Shawsheen Tech offers including culinary, cosmetology, carpentry and internet technology just to name a few.

The video ends just as the school day ends, with school bus pulling out of the Shawsheen Tech parking lot.
